Paphos - Cyprus

The city of Paphos, with a population of 38,000, is nestled at the foothills of the Western Troodos Mountains on the southwest coast of Cyprus. A coastal resort town, its focal feature is a charming harbour which attracts large numbers of visitors annually.
Dating back to 1400BC Paphos was the capital of Cyprus during the Roman times. It continued as the island's first city for more than seven centuries and indeed remains the capital of the west and home to the island's second international airport.
The city itself is steeped in a unique history. Legend claims that Aphrodite, goddess of love, was born to the sea off the coast of Paphos. Her birth caused a massive wave of cult worship across the Hellenic World. Agapeanor, leader of the Arcadian contingent to Troy, was shipwrecked at Paphos and it was here that St Paul stopped on his journey to Rome to preach Christianity and convert the local proconsul. The city's rich history is evident all around. The legacy of thousands of years and numerous influences, have created nothing short of an open museum. So much so that UNESCO have included the city, in its entirety, in its Cultural Heritage List.
UNESCO protection has helped to preserve the history of the city in the face of modern development. The city is currently thriving, creating a tangible sense of modern culture mingling with worlds of old. The treasures of the city include remarkable mosaics preserved beneath soil for over 16 centuries, mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the ancient Odeon Theatre, the Byzantine Museum and the District Archaeological Museum among others.
The city has a wonderful holiday charm, enriched by the elegance of the classical style buildings. The upper part of the town leads to the shopping district and the lower part opens up to the harbour and the open sea. The city's surrounding scenery is cultivated with banana plantations and is backed by the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, boasting a natural wilderness and breathtaking beauty.
